The lakeside cottage was built more than a decade and a half ago and while its owner enjoyed several memorable summers at the cottage it was time for a fresh upgrade. It was from Gilbert+Burke who revamped the interior and altered both the structural plans of the house and the landscaping around it to give it a new lease on life.
As is the norm these days it is once again large sliding glass doors and a double-height wall of windows above that open up the otherwise ‘closed home’ towards the small private garden outside.
Along with various shades of blue it is the presence of gray in the living room and the dining area that gives the home its distinctly contemporary flavor and helps it move away from the typical beach house ambiance.
Large windows in the bedroom and living areas usher in natural light even as the open plan living area eliminates the need for any additional partitions. Insulation and waterproofing upgrades for the roof complete the alteration which is stylish sensitive to the original design of the house and budget-friendly.
The main features of the revamped house are the wooden deck the new family zone and the kids’ playroom that interact with one another to create one large activity space that the entire family can enjoy.
The focal point of the house is most obviously the pool area and the outdoor lounge that comes with a dedicated kitchen barbeque zone and an Asian-style pergola that keeps the sun away on hot sultry days. The entire space is designed to create a ‘holiday resort’ vibe and the vivacious color of the pool tiles definitely accentuates this appeal.
The color scheme of the interior is dominated by gray and white hues that fashion a serene and cheerful backdrop in every room of the house. Splashes of bright color were added to this muted background using décor accessories and vivacious artwork without ever disturbing the polished contemporary style.
